Varieties of S-R Theory Sensation and Movement Bibliography IndexPresent day psychology still consists of different schools or ways of approaching the problems of mind and behaviour The schools are not as ill reconciled and as diverse as they are for instance in philosophy but the split between different systems and theories is still with us One reason for this is that attempts to understand the human mind and behaviour have had quite different origins and objectives from the outset Psychology originated partly from the philosophy of mind and thinking partly from a wish to understand inner experience and emotional life partly from attempts to look at behaviour objectively from the outside in the same way as the natural sciences looked at their subject matter and again in part from the need to develop methods controlling behaviour or using human capacity more effectively It is little wonder that there has been no satisfactory integration of such divergent aims and methods of approach The gaps between different claims as to what psychology is or should be are at the present time still strongly felt.
